What it does
Reverse Words changes the order of whole words, not the order of letters inside them. It is a word-level transformation, which makes it useful for language exercises, for checking whether a sentence depends on its word order, and for the kind of playful rewriting that turns a familiar line into something slightly wrong.
The tool has four modes because “reverse the words” means several different things. You can reverse the words inside each line, reverse the order of the sentences, reverse the words inside each sentence, or mirror the characters of each sentence. Each mode preserves the paragraph structure and leaves the original input untouched.
Four things that can move
- Words in every line
- Each line keeps its position, and the words inside it move backward. This is the mode to use for a list of short phrases or a poem where the line breaks are part of the form.
- Reverse sentence order
- The sentences stay readable, but the last one comes first. A three-sentence paragraph becomes conclusion, evidence, setup. This is the mode for testing how an argument reads when it is turned around.
- Words in each sentence
- Each sentence keeps its place, but its words are reversed. Sentence-ending punctuation stays at the end, so the result reads like a strange but punctuated sentence rather than a broken one.
- Characters in each sentence
- Each sentence is mirrored on its own, with punctuation moving to the front. This is the “true backwards” mode: “Hello.” becomes “.olleH”. It is useful for puzzles and for showing what a naive string reversal does to punctuation.
Punctuation and emoji
Word reversal is not a symmetrical operation. A period is attached to the last word, so reversing the word order would normally move the period to the front of the sentence. In the “words in each sentence” mode, the tool detects a trailing run of sentence punctuation and keeps it at the end. The words move; the sentence still ends where it should.
Reversing characters is a different story. There, the period genuinely belongs to the first character position once the string is mirrored. That is why the character mode produces “.olleH” rather than “olleH.” — the tool is showing you the literal reversal, not trying to make it grammatical.
Emoji and accented letters are handled as grapheme clusters. A family emoji is one unit, not a sequence of separate people that can be broken apart. A letter with a combining accent stays attached to its base. The result may be unreadable, but it is not corrupted.
Examples
Before
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. After
dog. lazy the over jumps fox brown quick TheThe period travels with “dog” because this mode preserves the line as a sequence of whitespace-separated tokens. The words are intact; only their order changed.
Before
The launch is on Friday. The team is ready. The page is live. After
The page is live. The team is ready. The launch is on Friday. The sentences are still grammatical. The paragraph now opens with the conclusion, which is a useful editing experiment even when you do not keep the result.
Before
One two. Three four.After
two One. four Three. The periods stay at the ends of their sentences. A literal word-order reversal would have produced “two. One four. Three”, which reads like a punctuation error.
Before
Hello. Goodbye?After
.olleH ?eybdooGEach sentence is mirrored independently. The punctuation moves to the front because that is where it falls when the characters are reversed.
Limits worth knowing
- Sentence splitting is heuristic. The tool uses punctuation and spacing to find sentences. Abbreviations such as “Dr.” or “e.g.” can be treated as sentence endings, and a sentence without terminal punctuation may merge with the next one.
- Word order is whitespace-based. Hyphenated compounds count as one word because there is no space inside them. Punctuation attached to a word travels with it, except for the sentence-ending punctuation handled above.
- Paragraph breaks are preserved. A blank line stays a blank line. The reversal happens inside each paragraph, not across the whole document.
- This is not a translation or a grammar tool. The output is deliberately unnatural. It does not reorder a sentence into a better one or fix the grammar that results.
- Nothing is stored. A refresh clears the input and settings. Copy the result before leaving.
